Cloud computing: not all sunny skies

April 13, 2011

“SMBs in Asia are ‘ready for the cloud’ as they have ‘clearly realised the strategic advantages of transitioning into the cloud’”. (Click for full article.)

For businesses looking to revolutionalise their technological infrastructure (which aren’t?), cloud computing may seem heaven sent. However, despite multiple benefits such as efficiency, reduced costs and mobility, the technology is fraught with risks, not least of which is information security.

And before you shrug these issues off as “IT department’s problems”, consider this: according to Information Systems Audit and Control Association’s (ISACA) IT Risk/Reward Barometer, the top three ways in which employees put their business security at risk are:

  • Not protecting confidential work data appropriately (50%)
  • Not fully understanding IT policies (33%)
  • Using non-approved software or online services for their work (32%)

How ready is your organisation in managing the risks involved in cloud computing? What is your role in mitigating these risks within your organisation?
