Get technology into the classroom already!
Kids today communicate using technology, yet the use of mobile phones and iPods is still restricted in most classrooms. It’s a pity that many schools continue to flog the teacher/textbook-centred model of education, eliminating everything and anything that can potentially distract from the lecture and erode the lesson structure. But times have changed, and so should outdated education models!
Children are always going to want to explore ideas, alternate tasks and interact with their peers. Thanks to the Internet and social media, we now live in the most globally interactive and stimulating period in human history—what better time than now to encourage this natural curiosity and hunger for learning?
More significantly, those who will engage with and benefit most from the dizzying variety of tools, technologies and information are the younger set (and younger they will get). Thus, it makes sense to educate students through the tools they use most frequently, so that the learning continues even outside of school.
